How to Convert Salary Between Pay Periods

Every pay figure can be traced back to one anchor number: your effective hourly rate. Once you have it, the rest is multiplication. This converter uses the standard full-time assumption of 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year, which equals 2,080 working hours annually. That single constant produces the four formulas professionals use most:

  • Hourly to annual: hourly rate × 2,080. A $35/hour job is $73,500 per year before bonuses.
  • Annual to hourly: salary ÷ 2,080. An $85,000 offer pays about $40.86 for every hour you actually work.
  • Annual to monthly: salary ÷ 12 (what your employer budgets), not 4 × weekly (what lands in your account varies with paycheck cycles).
  • Annual to biweekly: salary ÷ 26. There are exactly 26 two-week periods in a year, which is why biweekly payers give you two extra paychecks compared to monthly budgeting.

When the 2,080-Hour Assumption Breaks Down

The standard assumption is a starting point, not the truth about your job. Three situations change the math meaningfully:

Unpaid time off. If you take two weeks of unpaid leave, your real annual hours drop to about 1,960, and your effective hourly rate rises 6% because your salary covered fewer hours. Salaried-exempt roles absorb paid vacation inside the 2,080 figure, so unlimited-PTO policies are worth converting into actual hours when comparing offers.

Overtime and bonus-heavy roles. A $60,000 sales job with a realistic $18,000 on-target commission is a $78,000 role, while a $70,000 job that routinely demands 55 hour weeks pays roughly $30/hour, not the $33.65 the calculator shows. Always convert total compensation, and divide by the hours the role actually demands.

Contract work. Contractors must cover their own taxes, insurance, equipment, and gaps between contracts. A common rule of thumb is that an hourly contract rate should be 25–40% above the equivalent employee hourly rate to break even, before accounting for unpaid vacation days.

Biweekly, Semi-Monthly, Monthly: Why Paycheck Cadence Matters

Two jobs with identical annual salaries can feel different in your bank account. Biweekly payers issue 26 checks a year, semi-monthly payers 24, and monthly payers just 12. If you budget on a monthly basis, biweekly months with two full paychecks create a cash surplus you can direct toward savings, while months with three paydays (roughly twice a year) are the best windows for large planned expenses. Converting your offer into a daily or hourly figure also makes part-time, contract, and full-time options comparable on one axis: what each hour of your life is actually worth.

Using Converted Numbers in a Salary Negotiation

Recruiters quote annual bands; markets set them from occupational data. Before any negotiation, convert the band into an hourly figure for the hours you expect to work, then compare it against published wage ranges for the same occupation and region. Our career statistics hub collects the underlying hiring and compensation data with sources and methodology, and the job description analyzer can help you judge where a specific posting sits relative to the market before you state a number.
